At St. Coletta’s of Illinois, we work as a team to help clients become independent. We listen to their dreams, aspirations and goals to help them improve their life skills and reach their full potential. We go over their rights and communicate with their guardians. It’s rewarding work. I especially enjoy how everyone works as a team for each client. We care about the clients and are interested in learning about their dreams and listening to what they have to say.”
Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional
When I came to St. Coletta’s in 2003, I thought it would just be a transitional job. But then I got to know the people. It’s the most gratifying thing when (the participants) get to know you and see you as a friend. They all have different personalities and I’ve built a bond with a lot of these guys. The same can be said of the staff. We all work well together; it’s a very supportive environment.”
I put my heart into everything I do at St. Coletta’s because helping others is what I love to do. It’s my passion. All of us at St. Coletta’s are here for the participants, and we help them live their lives as comfortably as they can. A lot of the guys don’t have parents, so I kind of take on that motherly role. I assist them with the cooking, cleaning and clothes washing. In the summer, we work in the garden together growing green beans, tomatoes, squash, beets and flowers. It gives them something to take care of each day. What do I like most about the job? The growth that I see in the guys.”
