St. Coletta’s of Illinois Honors William “Bill” Rybak with Humanitas Award

Nov 19, 2025

Decades of dedication and leadership continue to support individuals with developmental disabilities

When it comes to helping others, William “Bill” Rybak never seeks the spotlight – he simply makes things happen. For more than three decades, he has quietly fueled the success of St. Coletta’s of Illinois, leading fundraisers, mentoring others and ensuring individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities have every opportunity to thrive.

In recognition of his lifelong commitment and selfless service, St. Coletta’s presented Bill with its prestigious Humanitas Award during its annual Caritas Benefit on Nov. 15.

“Bill represents the heart and soul of what St. Coletta’s stands for,” said Heather Benedick, Chief Executive Officer of St. Coletta’s of Illinois. “He doesn’t do this work for recognition or praise; he does it because he genuinely believes in helping others. His leadership and compassion have strengthened our organization for decades.”

Bill’s journey with St. Coletta’s began in 1990 when Crystal Tree Golf and Country Club opened and became the home of the agency’s annual Kennedy Golf Outing. Invited by Jim Madden, then-chair of St. Coletta’s operating board, Bill joined the board himself a short time later. He served for six years – several as Board Chair – helping to guide the agency’s growth and direction.

Even after stepping down, Bill never stepped away.

As Golf Outing Chair for more than 20 years, he continues to lead one of St. Coletta’s most successful annual fundraisers, rallying a devoted community of supporters and raising critical funds year after year.

“Bill has been a quiet supporter of St. Coletta’s for decades,” Benedick added. “He works tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure our mission moves forward. His humility, generosity and dedication are what make him such a deserving recipient of the Humanitas Award.”

Established in 1964, the Humanitas Award recognizes an individual at the national or local level who exemplifies leadership, compassion and service. Principal among the criteria are demonstrated leadership qualities; involvement with children and adults with special needs; commitment to community affairs; excellence in one’s chosen field; and a deep desire to help others. A long-term commitment to social growth remains one of the most significant factors in choosing each year’s recipient. President John F. Kennedy was the first honoree in 1964.

Bill’s devotion to St. Coletta’s is deeply personal. He has a nephew with Down Syndrome and once served as guardian and co-guardian for a cousin after the cousin’s mother passed away – a role he maintained until his cousin’s death.

“There’s always been a soft spot in my heart for St. Coletta’s,” Bill said.

A native of Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood, Bill attended an experimental high school program that split his days between a Catholic school run by the Christian Brothers and a public school. There he met his future wife, Jane, who shared a similar dual-school schedule.

Bill graduated high school in 1969, Jane in 1970, and the two married right after college in 1973. They raised two sons, Scott and Andrew, in the Orland Park area; both sons now have families of their own, blessing Bill and Jane with five grandchildren.

Bill earned his degree in accounting from Lewis University and became a CPA, launching a career that included positions at KPMG (1973-1986) and VanKampen Investments (1986-2000), where he served as Chief Financial Officer.

After retiring early at age 49, Bill began what he calls his “third career” – serving on boards for organizations he believes in. Over the years, he has lent his expertise and leadership to Calamos Funds, Jackson National Funds, Christian Brothers Investment Services, Lewis University and, of course, St. Coletta’s.

“I’ve always believed in contributing to organizations,” he said. “It keeps me mentally active and allows me to give back to the community.”

Generous with both his time and his resources, Bill embodies the very spirit of the Humanitas Award – selflessness, compassion and dedication to others.

While he prefers to work quietly behind the scenes, his influence resonates loudly through the organization.

For St. Coletta’s, Bill Rybak is far more than a supporter – he is a trusted friend, a guiding hand and a champion of its mission. His legacy of service and generosity continues to shape the lives of those St. Coletta’s serves every day.

Because St. Coletta’s has had the privilege of knowing Bill so well over the years, the organization created a special award just for him – a custom humidor adorned with the St. Coletta’s logo and containing a selection of cigars. He also received a few items from Assisi blessed by the Pope. In addition, a Papal Blessing from Pope Leo is on its way, further honoring Bill’s extraordinary service.

“Bill’s dedication inspires all of us,” Benedick said. “He shows us what it means to lead with heart, to give selflessly and to make a lasting difference. His example reminds us that one person’s commitment can transform countless lives.”
